Saddle FITTING Process

Saddle fitting process by northeast saddle fitters

THOROUGH & TRANSPARENT

At the end of the saddle fitting process, you will be confident about your saddle, you and your horse’s comfort.

From the beginning Northeast Saddle Fitters saddle fitting process will map out your horse to show reactive points, saddle area and your horse’s balance point. During that time, I’ll ask about your horse’s history. Though I may see blemishes, knowing what they have done and where they have been, makes it easier to understand. I will also survey your horse’s body and take several measurements and start to map out their back on paper, for you to keep.

THE Saddle FITTING Process

The saddle fitting process takes time to be accurate and gives you a full read on what you and your horse needs.

Process, step 1 learn about your horse's physic

MAPPING

To begin saddle fitting, I will start with mapping which allows you and I a chance to see areas to avoid, what area of your horse’s back can support a saddle, their back shape and spine width.

I also look and ask about previous issues and injuries.

YOU & SADDLE COMFORT

Taking a good look at what you are using is important and understand what you like and don’t like. When saddle fitting, it’s not just your horse and the saddle, it is you as well. This part of the evaluation is static.

I will later have you ride.

Checking the gullet, the quality of the underside of a saddle and the channel for spinal clearance

THE SADDLE

Your saddle is then evaluated. I take a few measurements, record information about it, and check the its condition.

Even if this saddle isn’t the right one, the data I collect will help to determine what worked and what didn’t. The saddle fitting process needs to take all elements into consideration

How does the saddle sit on your horse's back is important

HORSE & SADDLE

At this point we need to know how your saddle fits on your horse without weight or a pad or blanket. At this point we can see where the saddle is tight or loose.

I will show you how well the saddle lies on your horse and any pressure points that might affect your horse’s way of going.

MOVEMENT

How well does the saddle work with you and your horse. I look at movement, overall muscle activity, how you are sitting, and any issues.
If time permits, I also like to watch your horse being longed so I can compare how he travels with and without a rider.

Identifying the fit and reworking the saddle during the saddle fitting process includes trying different pads, half pads and even other saddles.

REWORKING IT

When you finish riding, we talk. If the saddle needs to be lifted we go through your pads and mine to find a working solution.
